Varicose Veins In Depth

Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, and sometimes painful veins that have filled with an abnormal collection of blood.  In normal veins, valves in the vein keep blood from flowing forward into the heart.  With varicose veins, the valves do not function properly, allowing blood to stay in the vein.  Blood that pools is what causes the vein to swell.  They are most common in the legs and in women, but can happen anywhere in the body and in men too.  Causes include:

  • Defective valves from birth (congenitally defective veins).
  • Pregnancy.
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Standing for too long can cause them to worsen.
Symptoms include:

  • Fullness, heaviness, aching, and sometimes pain in the legs.
  • Visible, swollen veins.
  • Mild swelling of the ankles.
  • Brown color of the skin at the ankles (in more severe cases).
  • Skin ulcers near the ankle (in more severe cases).
Signs and tests include:

  • Appearance of the leg when standing or sitting with the legs dangling.
  • Duplex Ultrasound Exam of the Extremity.
Treatment is usually done with a procedure referred to as "vein stripping", but there are less invasive procedures, depending upon the case and the patient.  Stay Informed!  http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002099/
